What you do

A small-group ride out of the centre on an e-bike, which is the honest way to cover the Appian Way in an afternoon without arriving destroyed.

You meet the guide and the bikes in central Rome, get comfortable on them, and set off along the path that runs past the Baths of Caracalla — once the second-largest public baths in the city. From there the motor does the work through the arches and out onto the Appia Antica.

The road was built in 312 BC and ran all the way to southern Italy; the stones under your wheels are the originals. Because Roman cemeteries sat outside the walls, the roadside is lined with tombs and mausoleums, the grandest being Cecilia Metella. You pass the church of Quo Vadis, where Peter is said to have turned back to Rome, the park of San Callisto and San Sebastiano with their catacombs below, the Circus of Maxentius, and finish at the Villa dei Quintili.

Minimum age 5. Children are welcome — tell us their ages when you book so the right bikes are ready. Not suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or pets.
