What you do
The Borghese Gallery holds one of the greatest private art collections ever assembled, in the villa Cardinal Scipione Borghese built for it in the early 17th century, inside one of Rome’s largest parks.
Entry is timed and tickets are scarce, so the visit is booked ahead and you walk straight in at an hour the museum is usually quieter. Two hours with a guide covers centuries of Italian art in one building — marble, fresco, mosaic and paint — from Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne and his Rape of Proserpina to Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath and Raphael’s Deposition.
The group is six people, so there is room to stand in front of a sculpture and ask about it.
Tickets are very limited and reservations are mandatory: book well in advance, at least a week, and plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the start time. The gallery is not wheelchair or stroller accessible.
