What you do

Two hours across the middle of Rome with a guide who is yours alone, which is the difference between ticking off four squares and understanding why they are there.

It starts on the Spanish Steps — the widest staircase in Europe, with Keats’s last house beside it, now a museum of English Romanticism — and goes on to the Trevi Fountain, bigger and busier in person than any film makes it look. Throw a coin for a return to Rome; the coins are collected every morning and go to a charity that feeds the city’s poor.

Then Piazza Venezia, where four roads meet under the white bulk of the Victor Emmanuel monument that Romans call the wedding cake, and on to the Pantheon, with entry included. Piazza Navona closes the walk, and somewhere along the way there is a gelato or a coffee.

Wear shoes you can walk in, and cover shoulders and knees: churches enforce it.

The Pantheon cannot be entered on the first Sunday of the month or on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November, when tickets are not issued; the walk runs anyway and nothing is refunded for it. The Trevi Fountain is sometimes under maintenance, and stays visible when it is.
