What you do
San Lorenzo is the student quarter east of Termini — murals, cheap wine, workshops behind shutters — and on Via dei Volsci there is a yellow-walled studio where people spend an afternoon making things out of clay.
Two hours, a long table, and a ceramist who sits with you rather than demonstrating from the front. You decide what to make. The shelves here are full of ideas that started the same way: mugs with a tennis racket for a handle, trinket dishes shaped like underwear, a clog with the holes punched through, a handbag built slab by slab, a dinner plate covered edge to edge in drawn fruit.
Nobody expects you to have done this before. The ceramist shows you how to roll, cut, join and smooth, catches the piece before it collapses, and helps you glaze it in the colours you pick. There is an aperitivo on the table while you work, because this is Rome and the hands are busy but the evening is not.
Then it needs the kiln, which is why you do not take it home the same day. The studio fires and glazes your piece after you leave. If you are still in Rome when it comes out you collect it; if not, it follows you — the studio sorts the arrangements with you on the day, since they depend on where you live and how long you are staying.
Either way it is the one souvenir from this city that nobody sold you.
