What you do

Leave Rome for a day and see two of the most striking places in southern Italy in one run: the Amalfi Coast and the ruins of Pompeii. It starts with a pickup at your hotel and a drive south in a private, air-conditioned car, with your own chauffeur.

The first stop is Positano, the cliffside town of coloured houses stacked above the sea. You get free time to take it at your own pace — the streets of handmade sandals, ceramics and lemon everything, a coffee with a view, or a plate of seafood and a glass of limoncello before moving on.

Then Pompeii, with skip-the-line tickets already in hand. You walk the streets of the city as it was before Vesuvius buried it in 79 AD: villas, mosaics, and the plumbing and heating that show how sophisticated the place was. Rediscovered only in the late sixteenth century, it still reads as a city rather than a ruin.

At the end of the day your driver takes you back to Rome.

Lunch, tips and a guide inside Pompeii are not included; a guide can be arranged on request.

Pompeii is a working excavation, so parts of it close as the archaeologists move; the day’s order can also shift for traffic or weather, and the driver will say so on the day. The tour runs in English, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese — ask for the language you want when you book.
